Singer Tae Jin-ah revealed his deep sorrow while caring for his wife Lee Ok-kyung's battle with dementia. On the February 16 broadcast of TV Chosun's variety show "Joseon's Lover," the daily life of the Tae Jin-ah couple was shown. Tae Jin-ah had previously revealed his wife's dementia diagnosis two years ago. The broadcast showed Ok-kyung in a wheelchair and conveyed the difficulties Tae Jin-ah faces in caring for his wife.
At 72 years old, Tae Jin-ah strained his back while transferring his wife from the car to the wheelchair. He confessed, "It's so hard." The doctor explained Ok-kyung's condition, saying, "It has been seven years since the onset of dementia, and she is in a severe state. You could say she is like a baby." Tae Jin-ah expressed his struggles, saying, "Other illnesses can be cured with surgery, but with dementia, you can't have a conversation. When she gets angry, I get stressed too."
Tae Jin-ah's son, Lee Ru, denied his mother's dementia diagnosis until three years ago but moved back in to help his father. Lee Ru said, "I was shocked. Since both of them are elderly, I thought I was the only one who could take care of them."
Tae Jin-ah traveled to New York, USA, for his wife's dementia treatment. He compiled videos of his brother-in-law and old acquaintances to help her recall past memories and visited his mother-in-law's grave. In front of his mother-in-law's tomb, Tae Jin-ah tearfully prayed, "I pray to my mother-in-law. I am keeping my promises and living well as you told me. So please grant me one wish. Please cure Ok-kyung's dementia."
He said, "These days, living is not really living. Each day feels like a thousand years, and my heart feels heavy. When I cry at home, I worry Ok-kyung might find it strange, so I turn on the water in the bathroom and sob. Please, let Ok-kyung not be in pain. If she cannot get better, at least let her stay in her current state. Why am I being given such a trial?" he cried out.
In the song "Ok-kyung," which he sang with his wife, Tae Jin-ah promised, "Dad loves Ok-kyung, so I will protect her." The broadcast also showed Tae Jin-ah arriving at New York airport and reuniting with Ok-kyung's younger brother. He said, "I think it's been about 25 years since I last came. My sister should have come with me, but she couldn't, so it hurts my heart."
On the way to his mother-in-law's grave, Tae Jin-ah sent a message of support through a video call with Ok-kyung's acquaintance. The acquaintance said, "Stay strong," and Tae Jin-ah shed tears upon hearing those words. Upon arriving at the grave, Tae Jin-ah recalled his mother-in-law's preferences, saying, "She liked snacks, didn't she?"
When the production team asked, "Did you prepare this place yourself?" he replied, "It was a difficult time, but I thought she should be laid to rest in a good place." In front of the tombstone, Tae Jin-ah said, "Before she passed away, she held my hand and said, 'Jo Seobang, you must take care of Ok-kyung until you die.' I am keeping that promise."
Tae Jin-ah prayed earnestly, "I wanted to come here with Ok-kyung, but she was too sick to come. Everything else is fine, but please cure her dementia. Please grant me this one wish." His confession was even more heartfelt. "These days, living is not really living. Each day feels like a thousand years. My heart feels heavy and it is hard. When I cry at home, I worry my wife might find it strange, so I turn on the water in the bathroom and cry," he revealed.
Tae Jin-ah prayed desperately, "If she cannot get better, please let her at least maintain her current state." His appearance deeply moved many people.
