IU x SUGA ‘eight’: Was There Originally a Different Collaboration Partner?

The intriguing behind-the-scenes story of how ‘eight,’ the collaboration between singer IU and BTS member SUGA, came to life has captured the attention of fans.

The Unexpected Start: On the web entertainment show Suchwita, IU revealed that before working on ‘eight,’ she had originally asked SUGA for the contact information of another BTS member, RM.

The Reason for the Change: Feeling psychologically lethargic at the time, IU wanted to resolve her emotions through music and initially sought help from RM. However, after receiving his contact information, she hesitated, as they were strangers, and found it difficult to reach out.

A Decision for Comfort: IU eventually concluded that working with SUGA, a fellow "93-liner" (born in 1993), would be more meaningful and comfortable. SUGA accepted the proposal, and the project moved forward rapidly.

The ‘3-Second’ Rule: SUGA demonstrated his prowess as a producer by creating a catchy intro theme. He emphasized the importance of the first "3 seconds" in deciding whether a listener will continue the song.

The Meaning Behind the Title: The title ‘eight’ was also IU’s idea. She noticed that her repetitive lethargy resembled the number ‘8’ turned sideways, symbolizing infinity (∞). By adding the significance of recording their age at the time—twenty-eight—the masterpiece was born.

Mutual Respect: While SUGA humbly credited IU’s vocals for the song's success, he also expressed respect for her as an artist with strict standards.

Future Possibilities: Showing perfect chemistry, the two expressed a desire to reunite for a bright dance track or a hip-hop genre if the opportunity arises in the future.
