The success of the movie "The Man Who Lives with the King" is having a significant impact on tourism in the Cheongnyeongpo area of Yeongwol, Gangwon Province. During the Lunar New Year holiday period, the number of tourists visiting Cheongnyeongpo increased more than fivefold compared to the same period last year. According to Yeongwol County, a total of 10,641 visitors came to Cheongnyeongpo between January 14 and 18, the Lunar New Year holiday period. In the same period last year, 2,006 people visited, and this figure surged thanks to the popularity of the movie.
Cheongnyeongpo is known as the place of exile for Danjong, the 6th king of the Joseon Dynasty, and was used as a major setting in the movie "The Man Who Lives with the King." The film tells the story of Danjong and the historical figure Eom Heung-do, starring Park Ji-hoon and Yoo Hae-jin. The movie attracted 2.67 million viewers during the Lunar New Year holiday period, reaching a cumulative audience of 4.41 million by the 19th.
At the Cheongnyeongpo dock, lines of tourists waiting were seen, and nearby restaurants and markets in the Jangneung area were crowded with visitors. As a result, the local commercial district enjoyed a holiday boom. Cheongnyeongpo, the emotional core space of the film, is surrounded on three sides—east, south, and north—by river water, making it appear like an island and effectively highlighting its symbolism as a place of exile. The ferry scenes in the movie served as symbolic elements hinting at Danjong's fate.
Cheongnyeongpo houses Danjong's exile residence, and in front of it stands the "Eom Hong-do Pine Tree." This pine tree was named to honor the loyalty of Eom Heung-do, who recovered Danjong's body and buried him in Jangneung. The pine tree, having endured the passage of time, and the tranquil riverside scenery evoke the tragic sentiment of the film.
Filming did not take place inside Cheongnyeongpo but in nearby areas. This was because Cheongnyeongpo is designated as a tourist site, making filming impossible. The production team built an open set close to Cheongnyeongpo to complete the work. Director Jang Hang-jun stated, "Filming was not possible in Cheongnyeongpo because it is a tourist site, so we shot in a location close to the actual Cheongnyeongpo," adding, "We sought the optimal place to fully capture the isolated yet beautiful atmosphere."
Audiences are visiting Cheongnyeongpo recalling scenes from the movie, especially the riverside and mountain ridges dyed red at sunset, which create a majestic atmosphere. Yeongwol County is exploring ways to revitalize tourism by leveraging the movie's popularity in connection with local cultural events such as the Danjong Cultural Festival.
"The Man Who Lives with the King" is also gaining attention overseas. It has been officially invited to the main competition section of the 28th Udine Far East Film Festival, held in April. This film festival, held annually in the northern Italian city of Udine, is the largest European festival showcasing Asian films with a distinctive character. Director Jang Hang-jun previously won the Audience Award with the film "Rebound."
With the movie's success, tourism in the Cheongnyeongpo area is entering a new phase and positively impacting the local economy. Cheongnyeongpo is establishing itself as a tourist attraction based on its historical value as Danjong's place of exile and its beautiful natural scenery.
