Singer-songwriter Lee Seung-yoon won the Best Rock Song award for the second consecutive year at the 23rd Korean Music Awards. Lee Seung-yoon took home the trophy for "PunKanon" at the ceremony held on February 26. Last year, at the 22nd Korean Music Awards, he won three awards including Musician of the Year, Best Rock Song, and Best Modern Rock. With this, Lee Seung-yoon proved his musicality and popularity by winning trophies at the same awards ceremony for two consecutive years.
In his acceptance speech, Lee Seung-yoon said, "I want to talk not about my story as a creator, but about the people who evaluate music," adding, "Every day, hundreds or thousands of songs are released, and I wanted to express my gratitude to those who find each one and give it meaning." He also added, "We will continue to work hard and create good music."
"PunKanon," released in August last year, is a compound word of "Punk" and "Canon." This song is a punk-style arrangement of "Canon," a track from the third full-length album "Yeokseong." Lee Seung-yoon participated in the arrangement of "PunKanon" together with co-producer Jo Heewon, guitarist Lee Jungwon, and drummer Ji Yonghee, who all worked on every track of the third full-length album "Yeokseong."
The Korean Music Awards selection committee described "PunKanon" as "boldly stripping away the original song's lyrical and condensed emotional texture and reconstructing it in a punk rock style placed at the opposite end, giving the song an entirely different vitality." They further explained, "The energy of rock star Lee Seung-yoon, accumulated through numerous live performances, bursts out in the most direct way in 'PunKanon'." They added that the song maximizes the energy, spontaneity, and liberation of rock music through interaction with the audience, functioning as a device that triggers collective excitement on stage.
At the ceremony, Lee Seung-yoon raised the atmosphere with a special stage performance of "Waterfall." He opened with his signature move of scraping the guitar neck on the microphone stand and overwhelmed the audience with powerful vocals combined with a grand band sound. His performance encompassed both intensity and delicacy, delivering the essence of explosive band sound.
Lee Seung-yoon is currently a leading figure in the band boom, standing out at major domestic and international festivals. He is scheduled to headline "The Glow 2026," held at KINTEX in Goyang, Gyeonggi, on March 21. Lee Seung-yoon's music continues to attract much attention, and expectations for his future activities are growing.
