The government has declared its goal to attract 30 million K-tourists by 2029. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced that the number of foreign tourists visiting Korea will reach 30 million by 2029. This goal is based on the increasing number of tourists who want to experience the daily life of Koreans. To achieve this, it is necessary to improve accessibility and develop content that reflects local characteristics.
Recently, foreign tourists visiting the BTS bus stop at Hyangho Beach in Jumunjin, Gangneung, showed interest in Korean popular culture. They took commemorative photos holding BTS light sticks and visited locations featured on BTS album jackets. Gangneung City has restored this bus stop and is utilizing it as a tourist resource.
In Paju, Gyeonggi Province, foreign tourists were observed enjoying naengmyeon (cold noodles) and suyuk (boiled pork slices). The restaurant owner expressed surprise at the increase in foreign customers even without special promotions. These tourists came to Korea to experience authentic Korean cuisine.
Foreign tourists enjoy various activities such as hiking Bukhansan Mountain, visiting jjimjilbangs (Korean saunas), exploring fortune-telling shops, and shopping at Oldamu. They obtain information about Korea through social networking services (SNS) and seek to experience Korean life. The inbound tourism platform CreateTrip named this trend "DailyCation." Last year, the number of foreign tourists visiting Korea reached 18.93 million, and this year the goal is 20 million.
On the 25th, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Choi Hwi-young stated at the National Tourism Strategy Meeting chaired by President Lee Jae-myung that K-tourism will be actively promoted at the industrial level. To this end, convenient transportation options that foreign tourists most desire must be provided. This demand has become even more important as more tourists travel individually rather than by group tour buses.
Foreign tourists arriving at Incheon International Airport mentioned the need for foreign language guides who can assist with purchasing airport bus or airport railroad tickets. There were also many opinions that reasonable transportation options between Gimpo Airport and Incheon Airport should be established. In local areas, lack of transportation convenience was pointed out as a problem, and there were cases of inconvenience due to insufficient foreign language guidance.
Securing tourism content is also essential. BTS and K-pop related content have played a major role in attracting foreign tourists. Foreign tourists want to visit K-drama filming locations, K-pop concert venues, and places related to artists. They need opportunities to enjoy cultural content such as national parks and traditional temples.
An increase in the number of tourists can contribute to revitalizing the local economy and resolving regional extinction. However, the issue of overcharging must be addressed. Many foreign tourists expressed surprise at the difference between prices they researched before visiting Korea and the actual prices. If they fall victim to unscrupulous sales tactics, their willingness to revisit decreases. On the other hand, tourists who experience warm hospitality tend to return.
For the success of K-tourism, convenient transportation, diverse content, and honest pricing policies are essential. When these elements are combined, Korea will be able to attract even more foreign tourists.
