Black Pink sets a new K-pop girl group record with 1.46 million albums sold

The new album "Deadline," released by Black Pink after about 3 years and 5 months, has made a new history for K-pop girl groups. This mini-album was released on February 27 and recorded sales of 1,461,785 copies within just one day according to Hanteo Chart. This is the highest first-day sales volume ever recorded for a K-pop girl group.

According to YG Entertainment, "Deadline" ranked number one on the iTunes album charts in a total of 32 regions, topping the worldwide charts. The title track "Go" secured top positions on major domestic music platforms, and the other tracks also gained steady popularity. The music video for "Go" ranked first on the global YouTube daily popular music video chart and immediately hit number one on YouTube Worldwide Trending upon release. This music video was selected as the most viewed video within 24 hours and currently has over 30 million views.

The "Go" music video received praise for its spectacular CG production and unprecedented scale. It features intense sound, transcendent spatial expression, and conveys messages of courage and solidarity, inviting diverse interpretations and immersion. "Go" is the first song in which all four members of Black Pink participated in composing, and Chris Martin, the vocalist of the world-renowned rock band Coldplay, contributed to the lyrics, composition, and arrangement. Another track, "Champion," features lyrics and composition by Lee Jae, known for his creation and vocals in "Golden."

Foreign media such as the Associated Press described Black Pink's comeback as "a powerful return that fans have waited for more than three years," noting that it "successfully combines Black Pink's signature style with new sound experiments." Jeff Benjamin, a K-pop specialist critic at Billboard, praised "Go" as the best track on the album, stating that it represents Black Pink's duality with "undeniable toughness and evident softness."

To commemorate this comeback, Black Pink is conducting a large-scale collaboration project with the National Museum of Korea called "National Museum X Black Pink." This project runs until March 8, with the museum's exterior walls and open courtyard illuminated in Black Pink's signature pink lighting, creating different atmospheres during the day and night. The nighttime lighting operates from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. and is freely viewable by all visitors.

Inside the museum's permanent exhibition hall "Path of History," a listening zone has been set up where visitors can directly listen to the new songs. Audio docent content featuring Black Pink members is also provided, introducing various artifacts with explanations in Korean, English, and Thai. This offers a new viewing experience that adds elements of popular music to traditional exhibition visits.

This combination of K-pop and cultural heritage is regarded as an example of expanding cultural content.

BTS will hold "BTS Comeback Live: Arirang" at Gwanghwamun Square on March 21 at 8 p.m. This performance celebrates the release of their fifth full-length album "Arirang" and marks their full-group comeback stage after about 3 years and 9 months. The stage will be presented in a symbolic space adjacent to Gyeongbokgung Palace, representing Joseon, and the Government Seoul Office, featuring Korea's representative folk song "Arirang" as the album title.

In 2020, BTS performed "Idol" and "Mikrokosmos" at Geunjeongjeon Hall and Gyeonghoeru Pavilion of Gyeongbokgung Palace, respectively. The "BTS Comeback Live: Arirang" concert will be free of charge, and the live performance will be exclusively broadcast live on Netflix to about 190 countries and regions. This is the first time Netflix has streamed a single artist's concert live.

BTS will hold concerts in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province on April 11 and in Tokyo, Japan on April 18. These concerts will be screened live in about 3,800 theaters across 80 countries and regions worldwide. The attempt to utilize historic spaces as part of the performance is becoming a strategy for expanding K-pop and serves as an opportunity to enhance the global influence of K-culture.

The activities of Black Pink and BTS are contributing to further strengthening K-pop's global influence. Through their respective projects, they are attempting to fuse traditional culture with modern music, providing new cultural experiences.
