24 Traditional Korean Paintings from the 16th to 20th Century Featured in the Catalog "Korean Old Paintings Shining Abroad"

The Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation announced on the 11th that it has published a catalog titled "Korean Old Paintings Shining Abroad." This catalog includes 24 pieces of traditional Korean paintings from the early 16th century to the 20th century. These works broadly highlight their artistic and cultural value. The production of the catalog was made possible by a donation from RM, a member of BTS, in 2022.

The included works cover various genres such as landscape paintings, portraits, and bird-and-flower paintings. Additionally, the catalog features works in various formats, including folding screens and hanging scrolls, showcasing the wide spectrum of Korean painting. A particularly notable piece is the 19th-century "Pyeongan Provincial Governor's Procession and Reception" held at the Peabody Essex Museum in the United States. This work intricately depicts the procession crossing the Daedong River and entering Pyongyang Fortress, as well as the lavish banquet scene, vividly revealing the prosperity of Pyongyang and the lives of its people at the time.

Also included is Kim Si's "Hanlim Snow Scene," created in 1584 and part of the Cleveland Museum of Art collection in the United States. This piece captures the peaceful atmosphere of a winter forest after snowfall. It is also available in high resolution.

The foundation arranged the explanatory notes of the works, secured through cooperation with overseas holding institutions, side by side to facilitate academic research. Secretary General Kwak Chang-yong stated, "This is the result of re-examining the beauty and depth of traditional paintings," adding, "RM's affection, who sponsored the publication, has greatly enhanced the value of the catalog."

The completed catalog will be sequentially distributed to national and public libraries and major research institutions both domestically and internationally. This is expected to further stimulate interest and research in traditional Korean painting.
