Busan's Amidong, sharing the name with BTS fandom 'ARMY,' becomes a popular tourist attraction

In Seo-gu, Busan, there is Ami-dong (峨嵋), which shares the same name as the official fandom of BTS, called 'ARMY.' The Seo-gu Council of Busan is promoting plans to develop Ami-dong as BTS tourism content. Council member Kim Byung-geun proposed the campaign "ARMY Comes to Ami" at the plenary session of the district council's extraordinary meeting held last month. He said, "The Chinese characters for Daegok Station on Line 3 of the Goyang City subway in Gyeonggi-do are '大谷,' which is the same as the Japanese reading 'Otani (おおたに).'" He added, "Thanks to this, the station is regarded as a sacred place among fans of Shohei Ohtani, the superstar of American professional baseball."

Council member Kim revealed plans to encourage BTS fans to visit Ami-dong. Ahead of BTS's scheduled concert in Busan in June, there are considerations to install photo zones and pop-up stores in Ami-dong and to introduce programs linked with famous local tourist attractions. Seo-gu has various tourist spots such as Gamcheon Culture Village, Biseok Culture Village, and Cheonmasan Mountain, and the local church is also named 'Ami Cathedral.'

BTS and Ami-dong also share a connection through donations. BTS member Jimin, who is from Geumjeong-gu, Busan, donated 200 boxes of ramen worth about 3 million won to 13 neighborhoods in Seo-gu, including Ami-dong, ahead of this year's Lunar New Year. The ramen was distributed to vulnerable groups with less than 100% of the median income, elderly living alone, and people with disabilities in the area.

Seo-gu is exploring the introduction of purple landscape lighting, symbolizing BTS and their fans, at the complex observatory on the summit of Cheonmasan Mountain. Discussions are also underway to change the English spelling of Ami-dong from 'AMI' to 'ARMY.' Seo-gu Deputy Mayor Kim Jae-hak said, "We are preparing to discover various contents that can continue the connection with our region, along with hopes that BTS will continue to have great activities after their return."

BTS will perform at Gwanghwamun Square on March 21 and will start their world tour at Goyang Sports Complex in Gyeonggi from April 9 to 12. Their concerts in Busan are scheduled for June 12 and 13. These concert schedules are expected to have a positive impact on the local economy, coinciding with the development of tourism content in Ami-dong.

The Seo-gu Council of Busan is working to revitalize the region through the development of tourism content linking BTS and Ami-dong. Ami-dong is likely to become a special place for BTS fans. Additionally, donation activities that benefit local residents contribute to strengthening the sense of community in the area.

BTS's global recognition and the enthusiasm of their fandom are important factors in the development of tourism content in Ami-dong. Through its association with BTS, Ami-dong has the potential to develop into a new tourist attraction. These efforts are expected to provide a special experience for BTS fans as well as contribute to the economic revitalization of Seo-gu, Busan.

Ami-dong in Seo-gu, Busan, plans to further strengthen the bond between the local community and the fandom through various connections with BTS. Along with BTS's comeback concerts, Ami-dong is likely to emerge as a new tourist destination for fans. These changes are expected to have a positive impact on both local residents and tourists.
