On the 12th, a coffee truck event celebrating the success of "A Man Living with the King," held at Seoul Shinmun Square in Taepyeongno 1-ga, Jung-gu, Seoul, caused dissatisfaction among citizens. Director Jang Hang-jun had promised to undergo plastic surgery, change his name, and change his nationality if the film surpassed 10 million viewers, but when it became difficult to fulfill this promise, he changed it to providing a coffee truck instead.
The coffee truck promise was announced on the 5th through the distributor Showbox's social media (SNS) and quickly spread through various media reports. The SNS post received over 6,000 likes, attracting significant attention. Although the event was scheduled to start at noon, the first 200 people were already filled before 11 a.m.
No notice about the event's closure was posted on SNS. A citizen who visited the site expressed regret, saying, "I came an hour early because they said they would give coffee, but I left empty-handed," and added, "If they had just announced that it was closed, I wouldn't have made a wasted trip."
Discomfort among citizens continued during the event. The event notice stated that anyone could see Director Jang, but at the actual site, security personnel and organizers asked citizens, "Do not take photos and move quickly." The venue was cramped, and the crowd spilled onto the sidewalk, causing severe congestion.
The sidewalk became uncontrollable due to the crowd gathered to see Director Jang. One citizen complained, "I almost fell because of being pushed by people," and said, "I don't understand why they held such an event on the street, causing this much congestion."
These complaints led to criticism of the event's management and pointed out the lack of preparation. Citizens claimed that the organizers did not prepare thoroughly in advance and emphasized that the event should have been held in a space capable of accommodating a large crowd.
This incident highlighted issues of safety and convenience at public cultural events once again. Since events intended to attract public interest often cause inconvenience to citizens, opinions are being raised that more thorough preparation is necessary for similar future events.
Director Jang's coffee truck event was meant to celebrate the film's success, but the citizens' dissatisfaction and the chaotic situation diminished the expected enjoyment. The event organizers need to establish measures to prevent such problems in similar future events.
