Since its release on December 31st last year, the movie "If We" has received great acclaim among audiences. The film attracted 2.6 million viewers, establishing itself as a steady seller in theaters. "If We" is a work about first love that has appeared for the first time in a long while since 2012's "Architecture 101" and 2018's "Your Wedding."
The protagonist Eun-ho (Koo Kyo-hwan) is a character who dreams of earning 10 billion won through game development and comes to Seoul after failing the college entrance exam three times. On a highway bus heading to his family home, he accidentally sits next to Jung-won (Moon Ga-young). The two are attracted to each other at first sight, but as young adults in their twenties who are awkward at expressing emotions, they sometimes feel jealousy toward each other's romantic interests under the name of "friends."
Eun-ho and Jung-won develop a relationship where they support and rely on each other's dreams. However, they fall in love while carrying the burden that they might part ways someday. In this process, they create their own sanctuary by loving passionately, fighting, and reconciling. But as time passes, their relationship undergoes changes. Eun-ho, who once sweatily helped move a discarded sofa with a handcart at Jung-won's word, is no longer there.
The film depicts the process of their hearts drifting apart due to various factors such as the father's illness, a job that does not suit their aptitude, and the changed deposit on the house. Eventually, they reunite ten years later, having lost all the light in the world. At this moment, they reflect on the question, "If we..." but their relationship already reflects the changed reality.
The movie emphasizes the tenderness of first love along with the irreversible reality. Lines like "I wanted to give you everything," and "I received everything. And Eun-ho, thank you so much for being my home back then," indicate that their relationship has become an important life experience beyond simple love. Even at an age when they realize the preciousness of first love, the audience can empathize with how they still feel emotions in their current relationships.
"If We" captures both the beauty and longing of first love, leaving a deep impression on viewers. The film reflects various phases of life beyond a simple love story. Through this movie, audiences are prompted to reconsider the essence of love and the complexity of the emotions that come with it.
