The Netflix animated film "K-Pop Demon Hunters" (hereinafter "KPDH") won two awards at the 98th Academy Awards held in Los Angeles, USA, on March 15 (local time), receiving Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. This work has created a global sensation by combining K-pop and animation, achieving a remarkable feat by sweeping the Oscars following its wins at the Golden Globe Awards earlier this year and the Grammy Awards last month.
"KPDH" won Best Animated Feature competing against major studio works such as Disney and Pixar's "Zootopia 2" and "Elio." Director Maggie Kang said in her acceptance speech, "To those who look like me, I apologize that it took so long for us to see ourselves in a film like this," adding, "I dedicate this award to Korea and all Koreans around the world." Co-director Chris Applehans emphasized, "Music and stories connect people beyond culture and borders."
The original song "Golden" is a K-pop genre track, marking the first time a K-pop song has won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Composer and singer Lee Jae said, "When I was young, I was teased for liking K-pop, but now everyone is singing songs with Korean lyrics. I am truly proud." He added, "This award is not about success but about the power to persevere."
Since its release in June last year, "KPDH" has surpassed 500 million global cumulative views, setting the highest viewership record for Netflix content. The film's music also gained great popularity, with the original song "Golden" reaching number one on both the US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Official Singles Chart. Following its wins for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song at the Golden Globe Awards earlier this year, the film also won the Grammy Award last month in the "Best Song Written for Visual Media" category, a first for K-pop.
At the Academy Awards, the celebration performance for "KPDH" featured Lee Jae, Audrey Nuna, and Ray AMI, who provide vocals for the in-film K-pop girl group "Huntrix," performing "Golden." The performance began with traditional Korean music, followed by performances featuring traditional Korean instruments and dance. Lee Jae expressed, "I am especially proud that traditional Korean music was featured at the start of the performance."
The highlight of this awards ceremony, Best Picture, was awarded to the film "One Battle After Another." Director Paul Thomas Anderson won Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for this work, and Sean Penn won Best Supporting Actor. "One Battle After Another" won a total of six awards, making it the most awarded film at this year's Oscars. Ryan Coogler's "Sinners" won four awards, including Best Actor, Best Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Cinematography. The Best Actress award went to Jessie Buckley for the film "Hamnet," and the Best Supporting Actress award went to Amy Madigan for the film "Weapon." The Best International Feature Film award was given to Joachim Trier's "Sentimental Value."
The success of "KPDH" once again confirmed the global influence of K-pop and Korean culture. This work has contributed to the worldwide recognition of Korean cultural content and laid the foundation for Korean artists to achieve more success on the international stage in the future.
