2100 Restaurants in Gwanghwamun Area Inspected for Hygiene Ahead of BTS Free Concert

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety will conduct hygiene inspections of restaurants around Gwanghwamun, Namdaemun, and Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in Seoul from the 16th to the 21st to ensure the safety of spectators ahead of BTS's free comeback concert. This inspection is a preemptive measure in preparation for the large influx of tourists, targeting approximately 2,100 restaurants.

The Ministry will focus on hygienic handling of food and kitchens, storage and use of expired food products, and compliance with price labeling. Additionally, measures to prevent repeated overcharging incidents that frequently occur at large-scale events will be implemented. Hygiene management supplies such as food utensils and container disinfectants, as well as sanitary gloves, will be distributed to restaurants near the venue, and food poisoning prevention guidelines, including handwashing, will be promoted to visitors.

BTS will simultaneously release their 5th full album "Arirang" worldwide at 1 PM on the 20th and hold a concert at Gwanghwamun at 8 PM on the 21st. The concert will be live-streamed on Netflix. It is unusual for a solo concert by a specific artist to be held at Gwanghwamun Square, and the full group comeback after about 3 years and 9 months following members' military service has attracted significant attention from fans both domestically and internationally.

The police expect a crowd of up to 260,000 people on the day of the concert, which is equivalent to the entire population of Yeosu, Jeollanam-do gathering in one area. The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency plans to divide the concert area into four zones for management. President Lee Jae-myung instructed at the Cabinet meeting on the 17th that "the issue is safety," ordering the activation of an unprecedented level of safety management system. Related ministries, including the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, police, and fire departments, have been required to prepare for all possible situations.

Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon warned at a safety inspection meeting on the 9th that "accidents happen the moment you become complacent due to familiarity," cautioning that facilities such as subway ventilation shafts and construction site barriers, which are usually overlooked, could pose risks. Seoul Metro is considering non-stop passage through three subway stations near the concert venue: Gwanghwamun Station, Gyeongbokgung Station, and City Hall Station.

From the 16th, stage installation work and road closures began in earnest around Gwanghwamun Square, Seoul, where the event will be held. Vehicle traffic will be prohibited on Sejong-daero from Gwanghwamun to City Hall from 9 PM on the 20th, the day before the concert, until 6 AM on the 22nd, the day after the concert. Large fences are currently being installed around Gwanghwamun to separate the stage and viewing areas, and access to the rooftops of 31 surrounding buildings will also be restricted.

In particular, safety fences and entry-blocking facilities will be installed around subway ventilation shafts. This measure aims to prevent large crowds from climbing onto the ventilation shafts to secure a view and is interpreted as a preemptive response considering the collapse accident of the Pangyo Techno Valley ventilation shaft in Seongnam, Gyeonggi-do, in 2014.

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety plans to continue inspections to ensure food safety around the BTS concert venues in Goyang and Busan following the Seoul inspections.
