
The release of the movie "The Man Who Lives with the King" has been shown to have a positive economic impact on small business owners in Yeongwol County, Gangwon Province. It was analyzed that the average daily sales of small business owners in the Yeongwol area increased by more than 35% after the movie's release.
The Small Enterprise and Market Service announced these results after analyzing KB Card sales data for four weeks before and after the movie's release date, February 4. The analysis targeted 2,161 stores in tourism-related industries within Yeongwol County, whose average daily sales increased by 35.7% compared to the four weeks before the release.
By industry, accommodation and food services recorded the highest sales increase rate at 52.5%. This was followed by arts, sports, and leisure services at 37.8%, and wholesale and retail trade at 27.0%. Notably, weekend sales increased by 68.5%, while weekday sales rose by 22.1%, indicating that tourism demand was concentrated on weekends.
Compared to the same period last year, sales increased by 16.4%. By industry, arts, sports, and leisure services showed the highest growth rate at 59.9%, followed by accommodation and food services at 21.5%, and wholesale and retail trade at 11.7%.
The Small Enterprise and Market Service explained, "This analysis is meaningful in that it verified the economic ripple effects of an external factor, such as content success, on the local commercial district through data." In-tae Yeon, Director of the Small Enterprise and Market Service, stated, "The Service will continue to conduct in-depth analyses of small business management conditions by responding to rapidly changing commercial district trends and major regional issues, centered on the research institute." He added, "We will support ensuring that the results of this analysis serve as a foundation to enhance the self-sustainability of local commercial districts, so that it does not remain a temporary phenomenon but leads to sustained competitiveness."
Meanwhile, the Small Enterprise and Market Service plans to systematically analyze the trickle-down effects on nearby commercial districts and the perceived business conditions of small business owners related to the upcoming BTS concert scheduled for the 21st at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul. Through this, they aim to evaluate the impact of large-scale performances on the local economy.
