The controversy over excessive celebrity security has resurfaced once again. Recently, a video showing bodyguards surrounding members of the girl group Hearts to Hearts as they moved through Incheon International Airport during their departure circulated widely on online communities. The video, filmed on the 18th, shows the members passing through the gate while being encircled by bodyguards.
As soon as the video was released, netizens sparked a debate over the security methods. Some criticized it, saying, "Isn't this obstructing passage?" On the other hand, opinions such as "Fans' sudden actions are beyond imagination" were also raised, leading to a sharply divided public opinion. In fact, during Hearts to Hearts' departure, some fans were seen excessively approaching the members, resulting in clashes.
Incheon International Airport stated that Hearts to Hearts had submitted an airport usage plan in advance. This plan was prepared by the security company beforehand to allow security personnel to prepare for crowd congestion. However, concerns were raised that excessive security in areas used by regular passengers could cause discomfort.
Excessive security during celebrities' airport arrivals and departures has been an issue multiple times before. In July 2025, actor Byun Woo-seok caused controversy when a private bodyguard checked the boarding passes of regular passengers with a flashlight while he was departing for Hong Kong through Incheon International Airport, exceeding the scope of security. These cases have highlighted the need to balance the necessity of celebrity security with the convenience of ordinary citizens.
Incheon International Airport Corporation considered allowing celebrities to use exclusive exit doors at the departure hall, but the plan was withdrawn amid controversy over "special treatment for celebrities." The airport explained, "Since it is an area accessible to everyone, we cannot block fans' access," adding, "It is true that regular passengers experience inconvenience as fans gather for filming."
The issue of excessive celebrity security also puts agencies in a difficult position. Even when schedules are not public, fans often gather, making it impossible to neglect security. Accordingly, there have been suggestions that celebrities should use the fast-track service for departures, but this is difficult to implement due to concerns over special treatment.
The recent case of Hearts to Hearts has become an important opportunity for discussion on the need to consider both the necessity of celebrity security and the convenience of ordinary citizens. While the need for security is acknowledged, there are ongoing calls to adjust the methods to avoid causing inconvenience to other users. It is urgent to establish a security system that satisfies celebrities, fans, and the general public alike.
