Im Sung-han's 'Doctor Shin' premieres with a 1.4% viewership rating... falls short of expectations

Im Seong-han's first medical thriller drama, "Doctor Shin," premiered on March 14 but recorded low viewership ratings. According to Nielsen Korea on the 15th, the ratings for episode 1 of "Doctor Shin" were 1.4%, and episode 2 was 0.9%. These figures are significantly lower compared to Im Seong-han's previous works. Im Seong-han has written numerous hit dramas such as "Watch and Watch Again," "Mermaid," "Heavenly," and "Princess Aurora," with "Watch and Watch Again" setting the highest record in daily drama history with a 57.3% viewership rating.

"Doctor Shin" tells the story of a genius doctor challenging the realm of gods and a woman with brain damage. The main character, Shin Ju-shin (Jung Yi-chan), is a doctor with outstanding brain surgery skills, and the story centers around his relationship with top actress Momo (Baek Seora). Momo falls into a coma due to a scuba diving accident, and Shin Ju-shin decides to perform a "brain change" surgery at the suggestion of her mother, Hyun Ran-hee (Song Ji-in).

After the first broadcast, netizens showed negative reactions to the drama. Comments included "It feels like a low-quality overseas short-form drama," and regarding a scene where Momo could not change costumes before filming a historical drama, some said, "The actors must have been embarrassed." However, some viewers positively evaluated the drama's immersion, saying, "This is why I watch Im Seong-han's dramas."

In a pre-broadcast interview, Im Seong-han revealed that the drama was produced with the theme of "K-maternal love." He stated, "If viewers are left with a deep impression after the last episode and the final scene, I would be happy as a writer." The production team also added, "We hope 'Doctor Shin,' filmed with the utmost effort as Im Seong-han wished, will create a new sensation."

"Doctor Shin" consists of a total of 16 episodes and airs every weekend at 10:30 PM. Attention is focused on the drama's future developments and changes in viewership ratings. There is keen interest in what kind of success Im Seong-han's comeback work will achieve.
