The movie "Salmokji" is a horror film centered on the famous haunted spot Salmokji and the water ghost, directed by Lee Sang-min. The film maintains a damp and eerie horror atmosphere, but the scares are composed of familiar elements. The repeated jump scares cause fatigue for the audience as the film progresses into the latter part.
The movie begins with a mysterious figure captured in the road view of Salmokji, a reservoir plagued by strange rumors. The road view filming crew returns to the reservoir for reshoots, where a series of inexplicable events occur, plunging them into chaos. "Salmokji" emits a fishy, gloomy vibe throughout, stimulating tactile fear. However, the film focuses solely on startling the audience and fails to break away from the conventions of traditional horror movies.
The story proceeds in a predictable direction without any special twists. The confined narrative within the limited space of "Salmokji" induces a sense of frustration, leaving the impression that while the subject matter is fresh, the development is clichéd. Kim Hye-yoon, known as the "romantic comedy queen" from the drama "Carry Sunjae and Run," delivers solid acting in her first horror role. However, it is questionable whether this work effectively utilizes Kim Hye-yoon. She consistently appears frightened and fleeing, failing to lead the narrative actively. The character's passivity and unclear motives remain puzzling until the end.
Other actors in the film also provide stable performances, but the lack of character appeal indicates the script's weakness. There are many holes in both direction and narrative. The film lacks sufficient explanation as to why the characters die and what the true nature of the events is. Even after the movie ends, the reality of the incidents remains unclear, and the ending, which leaves questions rather than fear, is considered a disappointing aspect.
Nevertheless, the film may appeal to the 10-20 age group who seek the simple fun of being startled rather than a complex narrative. If you want to focus on primal enjoyment, it is worth watching. The movie "Salmokji" is scheduled to be released on April 8.
