The movie "Final Investigation" has confirmed its theatrical release after seven years. The release was delayed for a long time due to lead actor Bae Sung-woo's drunk driving controversy and the spread of COVID-19 after filming was completed.
"Final Investigation" (directed by Park Cheol-hwan) is a crime investigation drama based on a true story. It depicts the process of detective Jae-hyuk (Bae Sung-woo), who was demoted to a rural area, tracking the truth behind a murder case involving two suspects together with rookie detective Jung-ho (Jung Ga-ram). The film begins with Jae-hyuk, once the ace of the metropolitan investigation unit, being demoted and partnering with Jung-ho, a rookie detective who is a third-generation chaebol influencer. While catching a thief who stole money from a rural church safe, they discover a blood-stained weapon and find out that this thief is a prime suspect in a murder case in Gangnam, Seoul. Although the case had already been closed with Jo Dong-oh (Yoon Kyung-ho) arrested as the culprit, Jae-hyuk and Jung-ho head to Seoul to find the real criminal. They receive a promise of reinvestigation support from prosecutor Mi-joo (Esom) and attempt to cooperate with team leader Oh Min-ho (Jo Han-chul) of the Gangnam Police Station, but they suspect his passive attitude.
Director Park Cheol-hwan, known for dramas such as Disney+'s "Grid" and "Dominion," makes his directorial debut with this film. He completed the screenplay by referencing a real case that occurred in Japan and similar domestic cases. The film was originally titled "Business Trip Investigation" and finished filming in 2019, but its release was postponed multiple times due to the lead actor's drunk driving incident and COVID-19.
The cast has been praised for their stable performances in their respective roles. Bae Sung-woo portrayed the realistic detective Jae-hyuk in a three-dimensional way, anchoring the story, while Yoon Kyung-ho shed his usual image to heighten tension. Esom and Jo Han-chul also added strength to the film. Although Jung Ga-ram had some shortcomings, his chemistry with Bae Sung-woo compensated for them. The seven-year gap is not significantly noticeable in the actors' appearances and performances.
While the development of the detective duo uncovering the truth behind the case is familiar, the film is attracting attention as a rare genre in recent theaters. The movie is rated for audiences aged 15 and older and has a runtime of 97 minutes. "Final Investigation" will be released on April 2.
