BTS topped the US Billboard 200 album chart with their fifth full-length album, "Arirang." With this, BTS simultaneously conquered the top spots on both the UK Official Albums Chart Top 100 and the US charts.
Billboard reported that BTS's "Arirang" recorded 641,000 album units during the tracking period. This figure is the highest first-week sales for a group album since the Billboard 200 began tracking in its current format in December 2014. Pure album sales reached 532,000 copies, setting a new weekly sales record for BTS.
Since first reaching number one on the Billboard 200 with "Love Yourself: Tear" in 2018, this marks BTS's seventh time at the top. With this achievement, BTS secured number one on major global music charts in both the UK and the US within about ten days of release. They also stood out on global charts, including a triple crown on the Japan Oricon weekly ranking and number one on major music charts in Australia and Germany.
Billboard explained, "BTS recorded the highest weekly sales since Taylor Swift's 'The Life of a Showgirl,' which topped the chart last year with 4,002,000 album units." RM appeared on a US broadcast and said, "This song ('Arirang') contains various emotions such as joy, sadness, longing, and resistance," adding, "We hoped our new song would be called a universal song like Korea's 'Arirang.'"
The title track of the fifth album, "SWIM," is about to enter the US Billboard main singles chart, the Hot 100. The chart results will be announced on the 31st.
