SM Entertainment announced that it is continuing to take strong legal action against deepfake crimes targeting its affiliated artists.
On the 10th, SM Entertainment stated in an official position that it is pursuing legal measures against acts that harm the personal information of artists, including the spread of false information, defamation, sexual harassment, deepfakes, personal attacks, insults, and invasion of privacy. In particular, regarding the production, distribution, and possession of illegal obscene synthetic materials, the company emphasized that these are malicious crimes that sexually insult and ridicule the artists, and due to the sophisticated synthesis causing mistaken identity, they result in serious defamation and damage to the artists' image.
The agency explained that it is continuously cooperating with investigative agencies by collecting related evidence and submitting complaints, and is also petitioning the court for severe punishment. As a result of these measures, 12 suspects in deepfake cases have been sentenced to imprisonment for violations of the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes (such as distribution of false videos). They received prison sentences, employment restrictions, and orders to complete sexual violence treatment programs. Their appeals and final appeals were all dismissed, confirming their sentences, and they are currently incarcerated.
SM Entertainment revealed that deepfake criminals share illegal synthetic materials through overseas SNS platforms with high anonymity and that, in cooperation with law firms in the United States and through investigations, these individuals are also being caught without exception. The company also informed that related investigations are still ongoing.
Finally, the agency urged special caution, stating, "Criminal punishment for the production, distribution, and possession of deepfakes is being carried out very strictly." It expressed gratitude for the cooperation of various platforms and pledged to continue doing its best to protect the rights and interests of its artists.
