Singer and actor Cha Eun-woo recently paid off taxes amounting to approximately 13 billion won in full.
On the 9th, Cha Eun-woo's agency Fantagio released an official statement saying, "Some amounts are expected to be adjusted according to the National Tax Service refund procedures, and the actual burden is estimated to be around 13 billion won." They also explained, "As the personal income tax has been fully paid, refund procedures will proceed for the overlapping taxation portions of the corporate tax and value-added tax that were previously paid."
Reports emerged that on January 22, Cha Eun-woo received a notice from the National Tax Service demanding additional income tax exceeding 20 billion won, raising suspicions of tax evasion. The National Tax Service reportedly found that Fantagio, Cha Eun-woo's agency, had signed a management service contract with a corporation established by Cha Eun-woo's mother, attempting to apply a lower corporate tax rate instead of the personal income tax rate, leading to the tax reassessment.
On the 9th, lawyer and accountant Kim Myung-kyu explained Cha Eun-woo's tax payment process on his social media. Kim stated, "The amount paid by Cha Eun-woo appears to be about 13 billion won based on the actual burden," adding, "This is not a late payment but a normal payment following the procedure." He further explained, "Cha Eun-woo underwent a pre-assessment review disputing the legality of the taxation before the official notice was sent, and after the review was completed, he paid the tax according to the official notice." He also noted, "If payment is not made after the official notice, a late payment penalty may be imposed," and added, "To reduce the penalty burden, it is common to pay the tax first and then dispute it through tax appeals or administrative lawsuits."
On the 8th, Cha Eun-woo personally stated on his Instagram, "I respect the procedures and results of the National Tax Service and have paid all related taxes to prevent further confusion." He continued, "Having worked with the love and support of many people, I take this matter very seriously and deeply. If there were parts I did not sufficiently oversee, the responsibility lies entirely with me. Under no circumstances will I evade responsibility by saying 'I didn't know' or 'It was someone else's decision.'"
