The Past and Present of the K-Pop Trainee System? Seungkwan and RIIZE Reveal 'SM vs. Pledis'

As YouTube content featuring the candid talk of K-pop artists gains popularity, the distinct trainee education systems of major agencies and the hardships faced by artists are being brought back into the spotlight.

Recently, RIIZE members Sungchan and Sohee appeared on "Boo Seungkwan’s Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo," hosted by SEVENTEEN's Seungkwan, where they shared interesting stories reminiscing about their trainee days at SM Entertainment.

Sohee, the main vocalist of RIIZE, confessed his honest feelings about joining the company in 2022. For Sohee, who had primarily prepared as a vocalist, the unfamiliar dance training was a major hurdle. He surprised everyone by revealing, "It was so hard to adjust to the trainee system that I ran away once before coming back".

There were clear differences in training methods between Seungkwan, who debuted under Pledis, and Sungchan and Sohee, who joined SM.

Recalling his trainee days with the members of SEVENTEEN, Seungkwan said, "We matched our choreography almost like robots," giving a glimpse into the strict training atmosphere of that time.

Seungkwan also expressed envy toward the training methods of Sohee's generation. Unlike the past method of matching lines while covering songs by senior artists, Sohee's generation has a higher proportion of hip-hop-based, free, and trendy practice. Seungkwan commented that it "looks much cooler".
