Honey is mainly composed of glucose and fructose, with over 90% consisting of sugars, allowing for rapid absorption in the body. It can be used as an immediate energy source and also contains B vitamins and various minerals. Honey has 294 kcal per 100g, which is lower than sugar's 384 kcal per 100g. It is also rich in minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and zinc.
It has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects, helping to prevent colds. According to the international journal Frontiers in Nutrition, honey promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria that are good for gut health.
However, honey may contain allergens such as pollen, so if itching occurs in the mouth or throat after consumption, intake should be stopped. Additionally, nutrients in honey can be destroyed if exposed to high temperatures for a long time, so it should be stored away from direct sunlight and is recommended to be consumed alone or with lukewarm food. The American Heart Association recommends that men consume no more than 9 teaspoons per day, and women and children no more than 6 teaspoons per day.
