Moon Geun-young reveals battle with acute compartment syndrome on 'You Quiz'... experienced four surgeries

Actor Moon Geun-young recalled her battle with illness and emphasized the importance of recognizing emergency signals in everyday life.

In 2017, Moon Geun-young experienced sudden pain in her right arm and was diagnosed with acute compartment syndrome after visiting the hospital. She underwent four surgeries and, after a long treatment, announced her full recovery in 2024. In a recent preview of tvN's You Quiz on the Block, she recalled, "The golden time had already passed, and necrosis might have already started." She also shared her feelings at the time, saying, "Mom, I'm so happy that I can finally rest without worry."

According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency's Injury Factbook 2025, approximately 3.55 million patients used medical institutions for outpatient or inpatient care due to injuries in 2023. That same year, 27,812 people died from injuries. This revealed that many injuries occurring in daily life lead to medical treatment.

Acute compartment syndrome is an emergency condition caused by abnormally increased pressure within a "compartment" where muscles, nerves, and blood vessels are located. The internal space of limbs does not easily expand, so when pressure rises due to trauma or severe swelling, blood vessels are compressed, blocking blood flow to tissues. When oxygen and nutrient supply is cut off, tissue damage progresses rapidly.

The most important factor in this disease is prompt treatment. The medical community agrees that if acute compartment syndrome is suspected, treatment should be administered as quickly as possible. Some sources explain that muscle and soft tissue necrosis can begin within 4 to 8 hours. Diagnosis is made by considering pain patterns, physical examination findings, and compartment pressure measurements, with a pressure increase around 30 mmHg regarded as a critical warning sign. If symptoms persist, emergency surgery to cut the fascia and relieve pressure may be necessary.

Experts recommend that if pain after trauma is excessively severe beyond normal levels or does not improve at all with rest, it should not be dismissed as simple muscle pain, and immediate emergency room care should be sought. They also stated that if pain does not lessen even with splinting or if the affected area becomes as hard as a stone, prompt medical attention is required.
