Director Byun Young-joo expressed her affection for the late actor Lee Sun-kyun along with behind-the-scenes stories from the filming of the movie "Helpless."
In a video released on the YouTube channel "CineDrive," Director Byun reminisced about working on "Helpless" 12 years ago with Director Bang Eun-jin. She remembered Lee Sun-kyun as more than just an actor, saying, "There are many actors, but it is rare to find one who gives the director a feeling of being 'on my side.'" She continued, "There are many great actors. Many actors who perform well and make the movie successful, but actors who are on the director's side are few. Losing Lee Sun-kyun was not just losing an actor, but losing a comrade for directors who make Korean films," as she became emotional.
Director Byun also shared an anecdote about the original author Miyabe Miyuki. Miyabe Miyuki cherished the film adaptation of "Helpless" and was deeply impressed by Lee Sun-kyun's performance. Director Byun said, "Miyabe Miyuki said she watched 'Helpless' twice a year. That was also Lee Sun-kyun's 'Helpless.' The author has a novel called 'Riyu' (Reason). Miyabe Miyuki gave the rights to that novel and asked to make it with Lee Sun-kyun again. But then that incident (his passing) happened." She revealed that later, representatives of Miyabe Miyuki visited Lee Sun-kyun's grave and met with Director Byun. "They said, 'He is gone, but we will give you 'Riyu.' Please make it.' That was a recent event. The rights to the novel 'Riyu,' which has no time limit, were given. All of this happened thanks to the friends who worked together on 'Helpless,'" she explained.
The video also revealed behind-the-scenes details about the escalator scene at Yongsan Station, which was the climax of "Helpless." Due to budget constraints and limited filming time, they had to shoot in just one or two takes. Lee Sun-kyun unexpectedly said the line, "Have you been well?" as his first words. Director Byun said, "At first, I thought it was a mistake, but the emotion at that moment was so good that I went with it, and it became the best scene."
Director Byun stated, "Honestly, I really cannot forgive the prosecution. I still cannot forgive the police either," adding, "I probably will never be able to forgive them in my lifetime." Director Bang Eun-hee added, "Such things have happened in the past, but I hope they never happen again."
Director Byun Young-joo expressed her hope that "Korean cinema will regain its strength and succeed again."
