Lee Chan-won, angered by the 'Shin Hae-chul death mystery'... focusing on suspicions of medical malpractice

KBS 2TV's "The Secret of Celebrity Soldiers" will focus on the music life and the mystery surrounding the death of the late Shin Hae-chul in the May 5th broadcast. Singer Lee Chan-won expressed anger on the show regarding Shin Hae-chul's tragic death.

In 2014, while preparing a new album with the band Next, Shin Hae-chul suddenly experienced abdominal pain and went to the hospital, where he underwent surgery for intestinal obstruction. It is known that the surgeon performed a "gastric reduction surgery," folding and suturing the stomach without the patient's consent, and reportedly said, "I sewed up your stomach a bit, so you won't be able to eat much now."

The broadcast revealed that during the autopsy, sesame seeds, a food ingredient, were found inside the pericardium surrounding the heart. Specialist Lee Nak-jun stated, "This is something that could never happen under normal circumstances," indicating that it is a medically inexplicable situation. Lee Chan-won reacted emotionally, saying, "Did they see the patient as an experiment?" The cast members were also shocked, asking, "Sesame seeds you eat?" and "Why were sesame seeds found there?"

Shin Hae-chul debuted in 1988 by winning the grand prize at the College Music Festival with the song "To You." The broadcast introduced anecdotes such as how he composed songs on a melodion bought from a stationery store to avoid family opposition, and how he prayed that if he could only do music, he did not need a home or a girlfriend. It was also revealed that during his DJ days, Shin Hae-chul chose to work unpaid on the radio to avoid interference instead of receiving appearance fees.

Through the band Next, Shin Hae-chul sang about society and the self, generously passing on equipment and know-how to juniors, sincerely hoping, "I hope the mistakes I went through will not be experienced by the younger generation." Music critic Bae Soon-tak stated, "Shin Hae-chul is a hero to me."

The doctor who performed Shin Hae-chul's surgery was later prosecuted and received a one-year prison sentence and temporary suspension of his medical license from the Supreme Court. In the damages lawsuit filed by the bereaved family, a compensation ruling of 1.187 billion won was made on May 11, 2019. This case led to partial amendments to the Medical Accident Victim Relief and Medical Dispute Mediation Act, which became known as the "Shin Hae-chul Act."

"The Secret of Celebrity Soldiers" will air on KBS 2TV at 8:30 PM on May 5.
