Otolaryngologist and webtoon artist Lee Nak-jun conveyed the medical community's reaction regarding Shin Hae-chul's medical accident.
KBS 2TV's "Celebrity Soldier's Secret" covered Shin Hae-chul's life story. While preparing for Next's new album, Shin Hae-chul was diagnosed with intestinal stenosis after sudden abdominal pain and underwent surgery. Director Kang, who performed the surgery, stated after the operation, "The stomach was sewn up well, so now even at a buffet, he probably can't eat more than two plates," revealing that the surgery was conducted without consent. In response, Lee Nak-jun said, "This is unacceptable. Emergency surgery can be performed in life-threatening situations, but even then, consent from a guardian is sought beforehand. There is never a case where consent is not obtained for cosmetic surgeries."
Shin Hae-chul was discharged two days after the surgery but continued to experience pain and repeatedly received outpatient treatment. Although narcotic painkillers failed to alleviate the pain, Director Kang ignored the warning signs and prescribed only painkillers without special treatment when Shin Hae-chul visited the hospital early on the fifth day after surgery complaining of chest pain. Shin Hae-chul later collapsed and passed away.
At the time, Director Kang claimed to have performed a "gastric wall reinforcement surgery," stating, "Because the shape of the stomach was deformed, I just corrected the shape," but the National Forensic Service's autopsy found a perforation about 0.3 cm in Shin Hae-chul's pericardium. It was concluded that Shin Hae-chul had undergone a "gastric reduction surgery" and died from peritonitis, pericarditis, and sepsis. Sesame seeds were also found inside the pericardium.
Lee Nak-jun explained, "Two perforations were found in Shin Hae-chul's organs, and the National Forensic Service determined that both the perforations in the small intestine and pericardium were caused by Director Kang's surgery. Food that leaked from the small intestine pierced the diaphragm and reached the pericardium." He also stated, "The reason the deceased did not feel pain when his abdomen was pressed is because he was taking narcotic painkillers. Usually, emergency rooms do not prescribe painkillers if symptoms are not confirmed. This wrong judgment led to a misdiagnosis."
Lee Nak-jun reported that five patients operated on by Director Kang have died. Regarding Director Kang's one-year prison sentence for involuntary manslaughter, he explained, "It is difficult to prove intent, so the sentence for involuntary manslaughter tends to be light," and added, "Even within the medical community, people are wondering, 'Who is this person? Why does this keep happening?'"
