Girls Planet 999's 'Rice Cake' is CLC member Choi Yu-jin. The newly formed 'Boyz Planet' features a member of Pentagon. Mnet continues to follow a clear and steady path, with some changes to the system, but the composition remains unchanged. What stood out was the talent and grace of the contestants, showcasing their potential.
The first episode of 'Boys Planet' aired on the 2nd. 95 trainees were introduced one by one in the studio and were ranked through a star test. It combined familiar elements such as composition and scenes, which made it feel repetitive. However, as the saying goes, 'knowledge is scarier', and the two-hour show was surprisingly enjoyable.
There have been some visual changes since the beginning. 'Girls Planet' is divided into Korean, Chinese, and Japanese, with three people connected by a specific keyword appearing together for a sense of harmony. It's divided and arranged to emphasize confrontation.
Group K and group G are divided into two sides, with a sharp division between half-chicken and half-chicken styles. Group G trainees wore colorful outfits with various designs, while group K trainees wore relatively neat outfits such as vests and pale colors. This stylistic difference, which even surprised the trainees, seems to hint at a future confrontation between the two groups.
The star level test is the prelude to the debut contest, allowing viewers to judge the skills of the trainees from groups K and G. The winning group gains an advantage for the next test track. The trainees, aware of the benefits, cheered for their group, adding excitement for the viewers with their intense competition.
The trainees performed on stage based on their self-assessed star rating, and the final ratings were determined from highest all-star to no-star according to the masters' evaluation. Some trainees were surprised by how they made it through the preliminary round with unsteady singing and poor dancing skills, but overall, the performance was of high quality.
The confrontation between K-group and G-group in Yuehua Entertainment, an instant heated battle between dance master Lip J and trainee Seong Han-bin, a clumsy but engaging stage, and an impromptu performance by two trainees who both chose 2PM's 'My House' as their first song, these elements made the broadcast interesting.
While the competition takes center stage, the story elements that give depth to the show are also well placed. For example, the tearful friendship between Seong Han-bin (Studio Glide) and Seok Matthew (MNH Entertainment) was revealed and their performance of 'My House' is expected to be a highlight. The story of the rigorous training that the trainees undergo to become stars is a familiar theme that Mnet has used regularly in its 'Produce' series.
The most attention-grabbing person on this episode is Pentagon member, Hu. He debuted in October 2016 and has been in the industry for 7 years. He entered the competition under his real name, Lee Hoi-taek, and surprised everyone with his looks. Hui sat in the first seat and immediately caught everyone's attention with his explosive live singing skills.
One of the trainees performed during the Pentagon's April 2018 release of 'Shine', a song that Hui participated in composing and writing the lyrics for. It was the time when Pentagon shone the most. Hui, with tears in his eyes, said that the happiest moment while performing at Pentagon was during the 'Shine' promotions. As the original songwriter, he was grateful. The screen then switched to Hui being evaluated, setting the stage for the next episode.
CLC member, Choi Yu-jin, who had only been in the industry for 7 years at the time, also caught the attention of the trainees as soon as she appeared. While the proficiency test was ongoing, the Chinese trainees performed CLC's song 'HELICOPTER', and one trainee had a heated exchange with Choi Yu-jin. The first episode ended with Choi Yu-jin taking the stage for the test.
Just like 'Girls Planet' gained attention by featuring Choi Yoo-jin, 'Boys Planet' also used her as bait to get viewers to watch the next episode. It's a familiar strategy, but the show still managed to fill two hours with fun. Although the show consists of scenes that are similar to others, it still provides a sense of excitement, as the saying goes, 'the taste you know is scarier.'
