[The FactㅣReporter Munhwayoung] Blackpink Jennie mentioned the controversy surrounding her vaping indoors.
In an interview with the American magazine Harper's Bazaar published on the 19th (local time), Jennie mentioned the controversy in July when she smoked an e-cigarette indoors in Italy and called it "a historical and cultural incident". The magazine said that for Blackpink, privacy is a luxury and any spontaneous action by the members can cause controversy.
In response to this question, Jennie shared: "What should I do? If Koreans feel that it is wrong, then I need to fix it. I understand why the Korean public is angry. This is a cultural and historical issue."
Previously, in July, videos of Jennie smoking an e-cigarette at home went viral on online communities and social media. In the video, Jennie was getting her makeup and hair done, she put the object suspected to be an e-cigarette in her mouth and blew smoke, especially straight into the face of the employee working right in front of her, which caused a lot of controversy.
Many netizens expressed their dissatisfaction and criticized Jennie's actions: "Why did you blow smoke into the employee's face?", "So disrespectful", "How many artists have been involved in scandals because of smoking at home". However, some foreign newspapers commented: "Korean artists are too used to being scrutinized like this. They face strict ethical and behavioral standards, and any mistakes will not be overlooked."
Previously, Jennie's management company, OA Entertainment, issued an official press release apologizing: "We sincerely apologize to everyone who feels dissatisfied with Jennie's actions in the published content." The company also said that Jennie regretted smoking indoors and affecting other employees. She contacted the staff present at the scene directly to apologize.
