Apink Almost Debuted as 'Jangsu Dolchimdae'... Behind the Bizarre Group Name Contest

Apink revealed the story behind why they could not use the names suggested in the naming contest as their group name. On the January 7th broadcast of SBS PowerFM's "Escape at 2 o'clock Cultwo Show," Hwang Chi-yeul appeared as a special DJ, and Apink appeared as guests on the "Special Invitation" segment.

During the broadcast, a listener mentioned their experience participating in Apink's past naming contest. When Kim Tae-gyun asked whether Apink's group name was chosen through the contest, the Apink members replied, "No. There were names that we couldn't use."

Apink specifically mentioned the names suggested in the contest at the time. The members gave examples such as Jangsu Dolchimdae, Bureokjam, and Seapeol. Jangsu Dolchimdae carries the meaning of longevity, Bureokjam is a plant that means "to float," and Seapeol means pearl of the sea.

Jung Eun-ji added, "There was also Hanrabong Jjondeugi." She continued, "Orange Caramel seniors were doing well, so there were many like that." This indicates that various creative names were proposed during Apink's naming process.

Apink judged that these names were not suitable as a group name and eventually debuted under a different name. They thought the names suggested in the contest were unique but did not match the group's identity.

Since their debut in 2011, Apink has shared several episodes related to their name, communicating with their fans. By sharing their experience in the group name selection process, they have been able to get closer to their fans.

This broadcast served as an opportunity to look back on Apink's past and contributed to strengthening the group's history and communication with fans. Apink plans to continue developing their relationship with fans through various activities in the future.
