In the MBC Friday-Saturday drama "21st Century Grand Lady," Gong Seung-yeon took on the role of Yoon Yi-rang and delivered a counterattack that changed the flow of the story.
In episodes 5 and 6, which aired on April 24 and 25, Seong Hee-joo (played by IU) was involved in a car accident while driving her son Yoon, causing the marriage of Prince Ian (played by Byun Woo-seok) to be halted. Upon hearing the news of the accident, Yoon Yi-rang rushed to the hospital and was relieved to find that Yoon was not seriously injured, but she showed maternal concern.
Prince Ian pressured Yoon Yi-rang by revealing that he knew about the past when she changed the late king's (played by Sung Joon) will. Yoon Yi-rang then spoke to her father, Yoon Sung-won (played by Jo Jae-yoon), saying, "Seong Hee-joo will become a weakness for the prince, so wouldn't it be better to keep her within reach?" hinting at a new plan. Later, before the banquet she hosted, Yoon Yi-rang agreed to Prince Ian's request to invite Seong Hee-joo to the event instead of breaking off the marriage, but she instead secured approval for Yoon's marriage, showing a shaken side.
In the latter part of the episode, Yoon Yi-rang arranged a dinner with Seong Hee-joo and warned Prince Ian not to block Yoon's future, launching an unexpected counterattack. She also mentioned the wounds Prince Ian had inflicted on her father in the past, turning the tables.
Gong Seung-yeon delivered an immersive performance perfectly blending with her character. She carefully expressed the changing expressions, eyes, and subtle emotional shifts as she guarded her son Yoon's throne while being wary of Prince Ian and Seong Hee-joo.
"21st Century Grand Lady" airs every Friday and Saturday at 9:50 PM.
