Son Tae-jin revealed his family’s musical tradition and his maternal grandmother’s special background on KBS2 variety show ″Newly Released Pyeonstorang.″

On the broadcast, Son Tae-jin personally cooked for Yoon Sang and Yang Hee-eun using a tteokgalbi recipe passed down for three generations. He shared that he was raised by his maternal grandmother, whom he respects greatly for having a significant influence on his life. Son Tae-jin explained that his grandmother mastered English through self-study, worked at the U.S. Embassy, and was active in various fields such as war correspondent, interpreter, translator, and announcer. During the Korean War, she hosted English radio broadcasts for the UN forces from an underground bunker, and it was shared that the UN soldiers spent time listening to her voice.

The show also revealed that Son Tae-jin’s family has an extraordinary musical background. He introduced his grandmother’s family, the Cheongsong Shim clan, which includes three human cultural assets, calling them the ″Bach family of Korean traditional music.″ His great-great-grandfather Shim Jeong-soon was a master of pansori and gayageum byeongchang, his great-great-grandaunt Shim Hye-young was Korea’s second female singer, and his great-great-grandaunt Shim Hwa-young was a master of the intangible cultural asset Seungmu dance. His great-grandfather Shim Jae-deok was known as a pansori theorist, and his grandaunt is singer Shim Soo-bong.

Son Tae-jin said, ″My grandmother was also good at cooking, so she made everything my grandfather wanted to eat.″ Love letters and notes exchanged in English between his grandmother and grandfather were also revealed. He expressed pride, saying, ″If my grandmother had seen me sing, she would have been really happy.″ The cast admired Son Tae-jin’s proficiency in five languages and his musical talent, noting that these were influenced by his family.
