Singer and actor Harisu opened up about the difficult past she faced as a transgender celebrity. On the 10th, Harisu appeared on the YouTube channel 'ThisIsTheRealFinal' and shared her experiences together with dancer Monica. She revealed that she entered the entertainment industry as a male student in 1991, starting with background roles. At that time, her family register listed her as male, and because she had to discuss her gender identity when signing contracts, she had to give up many opportunities.
Harisu spoke about her experience when she revealed that she was transgender. She said, "I was often asked if I was really a woman, demanded to have sex, or told to take off my clothes." These experiences were a huge shock to her. She recalled her painful past, saying, "Even when receiving love from the public, they treated me kindly in front of me, but said different things behind my back."
She emphasized that although she wanted to live as a woman through gender reassignment surgery, that time was actually a new beginning. Harisu said, "From society's perspective, I was just a transgender person." Since debuting as a cosmetics model in 2001, she has been actively working as a singer and actress.
Harisu also mentioned another episode where she declined a movie offer a few years ago because the content did not align with the direction she wanted. She said, "It was a story where a transgender person has sex, sucks the energy of a man, and then transforms into me," adding, "I didn't want to be consumed in such a movie."
Despite the difficulties in the entertainment industry, Harisu made efforts to maintain her identity and went through many struggles in the process. She said, "There were many hardships even when receiving love from the public," and added, "I wanted to live as a woman, so I had gender reassignment surgery, but even after that, I had to endure many stares."
As South Korea's first-generation transgender celebrity, Harisu is influencing many people through her story. By sharing her past pain, she showed her determination to change social perceptions. Harisu's story contributes to increasing understanding of transgender people and forming empathy for their lives.
Harisu plans to continue various activities based on her experiences. She stated, "I hope what I have gone through can help others," and expressed that she will keep raising her voice.
