BTS leader RM visited the 'Frieze Seoul' International Gallery exhibition hall held at COEX in Gangnam-gu, Seoul on the 3rd of last month. This exhibition reflects RM's interest in art, and his personal collection will be exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMoMA) in the United States from October next year until February 2027.
On the 2nd (local time), SFMoMA announced the opening of a special exhibition, 'RM x SFMOMA,' in collaboration with RM. About 200 pieces, including RM's personal collection that reveals his artistic sensibility and collecting aesthetics, as well as works owned by the museum, will be displayed. RM is directly participating as the curator of this exhibition.
This is the first time SFMoMA has collaborated with a K-pop artist since its establishment. The museum stated, "We highly valued RM's profound collecting taste and affection for contemporary art and proposed the project first." The exhibition will be held as a joint project between SFMoMA and RM.
RM said, "We live in an era defined by boundaries, and this exhibition reflects boundaries such as East and West, Korea and the United States, modern and contemporary, individual and universal," adding, "Whether viewed with curiosity or academic research, I hope it becomes a small but solid bridge for many people."
Janet Bishop, senior curator at SFMoMA, said, "Visitors will make new discoveries as they appreciate RM's beautiful and contemplative collection of paintings and sculptures alongside the museum's holdings."
The exhibition includes works by Korean modern and contemporary masters from RM's collection. Works by Yoon Hyung-geun, Park Rae-hyun, Kwon Ok-yeon, Kim Yoon-shin, Do Sang-bong, and Jang Uk-jin will be displayed. Additionally, works owned by SFMoMA by Kim Whanki, Mark Rothko, Agnes Martin, Henri Matisse, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Paul Klee are also included. Many of these works will be shown to the public for the first time.
This exhibition is regarded as an opportunity to explore RM's artistic vision and the boundaries of contemporary art. Through his collection, RM is expected to contribute to promoting cultural exchange between Korea and the United States and increasing public interest in contemporary art.
The specific schedule of the exhibition begins in October next year. This special exhibition, featuring RM's personal collection alongside SFMoMA's works, will offer a new experience to visitors who love contemporary art. Visitors will be able to appreciate various artworks through RM's unique perspective.
In addition to BTS's musical activities, RM has a deep interest in art, and through this exhibition, he plans to expand that interest further. His artistic vision is expected to inspire many people. The collaboration with SFMoMA will be an opportunity to enrich RM's artistic journey even more.
